The House

Casa Turquesa is nested in the most quiet side of Paraty’s historic center, overlooking the docks. It is a guesthouse in the truest sense of the word. That the house has only nine suites ensures an ambience of warmth and intimacy. Opened in 2008, the hotel occupies a restored historic mansion that faithfully recreates the 18th-century façade of the original building destroyed in a fire thirty years ago. Both the restoration and the decoration were overseen by Renato Tavolaro who is a specialist in colonial Brazilian architecture.

Wide windows and sweeping balconies capture scenes that make Paraty one of the most charming cities in Brazil: the traditional tiled roofs of the colonial mansions, the mountains surrounding the Santa Rita Church, built in 1722, and the shimmering green water of the exuberant Paraty Bay and its beautiful islands. The typical charm of the period’s architecture is complemented by all the comforts expected of a contemporary hotel: Egyptian cotton sheets, wi-fi throughout the premises and pampering à la Casa Turquesa, including personalized Havaianas flip-flops that guests receive as a gift so they feel more at home from the moment they arrive.

Warm colors and natural materials like wood and stone bring a sense of coziness to each of Casa Turquesa’s rooms. The hotel’s common area includes a spacious living room, a boutique and a library – complete with a fireplace to gather around on colder days. Just outside is the courtyard enclosed by a garden dotted with orchids. It offers a whirlpool to relax in, a bar and a charming gazebo that´s perfect for enjoying a drink or getting a massage.

The Lightworks lighting design highlights the designer furniture by Zanine Caldas, Carlos Mota and Armando Cerello. The turquoise color that gives the hotel its name can be found in subtle splashes throughout the premises: from the window shutters to the sofa to the paintings by Tiacho Baenninger –Tiacho is a two-time Arte Naif Biennial award winner. Sculptures by local artist Pedro Malvão and an original photograph signed by Thomas Farkas, a Hungarian photographer raised in Brazil, taken especially for the house, are among the other notable artwork.

With its attentive staff and personalized service, Casa Turquesa is the ideal place for a singular experience of true luxury that guarantees your worry-free travel and rest.
